A FAMILY ADVOCATE
IS SOMEONE WHO:

  • Encourages
  • knows how to listen
  • cares
  • keeps confidences
  • withholds judgment
  • is dependable
  • is a role model
  • provides information
  • is a friend


A FAMILY ADVOCATE'S ROLE
IS NOT TO BE A:

  • therapist
  • chauffeur
  • housekeeper
  • baby-sitter
  • judge
  • spy
  • home health aide
  • social worker
  • banker

The Family Advocate assists the family in

  • Problem Solving
  • Lowering the stress level in the home
  • Building feelings of confidence and self-worth
  • Teaching parenting a coping skills

The Family Advocate offers parents the opportunity to experience constructive behavior through
  • Attentive listening
  • Caring encouragement
  • Special outings

It is the establishment of a trusting relationship that eventually helps bring about change in the family.  As the parents' basic needs are met, they are better able to meet their childrens' needs.


BECOMING A VOLUNTEER FAMILY ADVOCATE

  • Attend the training sessions
These sessions can be tailored to meet your schedule.  After completing the training, you are not obligated to become a Family Advocate.
  • Complete an application, and interview with Center Staff
  • Commit to one year of service, one hour per week.
